I think a clearcoat would be a very good idea, it'll give your paint more depth and also add an extra layer of "protection" to your paint job. It seems that since motorcycles are in the elements as they are, just like cars, clearcoating is a good idea as the automotive industry seems to think so. I don't know much about types of paints, but maybe PPG offers a clear finish which will mate well with what you used for paint. I'd probably check with a couple of local body shops in your area to see what would work the best. I've found them to be very cooperative when I've asked similar questions about repainting my bike's fenders and tank etc.
What color did you paint your machine, and could you offer any pointers to others who might be thinking about painting theirs ?
